Vol. 372 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

81.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason disability benefit was not paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick for the period 20 March 1987 to 2 April 1987.

The person concerned is in receipt of maternity benefit from 3 April 1987. She contacted the Department on 21 April 1987 seeking payment in respect of a claim for disability benefit for the period 24 March 1987 to 2 April 1987. However, as no medical certificates had been received in the Department she was requested to furnish duplicates. The necessary medical evidence was received in the Department on 8 May 1987 and a cheque for £83.10 was issued to the person concerned on that date, paying her for the period from 24 March 1987 to 2 April 1987.

82.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if approval will be given for a deserted wife's allowance application of a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if this will be expedited in view of the urgent need of this person.

The deserted wife's benefit claim of the person concerned was disallowed on 6 May 1987 because the deciding officer held that her husband had not left her of his own volition.

It is proposed to treat the Deputy's question as an appeal against the decision and the appropriate form is being issued to the claimant to enable her to state her reasons for the appeal. At present, the person concerned is in receipt of £55.40 per week disability benefit and £33.15 per week by way of separate payment of the dependants' portions of her husband's unemployment assistance.
