These bodies are the National Museum, the National Library, the Irish Manuscripts Commission, the Public Record Office, the State Paper Office and the National Economic and Social Council.
The staff of my Department are engaged in servicing the Office of the Taoiseach and the two Ministers of State; providing a Secretariat to the Government and a personnel and financial management service; exercising a co-ordinating role in matters related to Northern Ireland, European and International Affairs and culture and the arts. A Government Information Service is also provided. In addition, my Department monitors operations of the bodies under its aegis.

(A) The increase in staff numbers in 1981 is due to:
(i) the abolition of the Department of Economic Planning and Development and the transfer of staff to the Department of the Taoiseach and the Department of Finance.
(ii) the transfer of responsibility to the Department for the National Economic and Social Council and the National Board for Science and Technology whose staff are included in the 1981 figures.
(iii) the assumption of responsibility for the Department's messenger and cleaning service, formerly shared with the Department of Finance.
(B) The increase in costs in 1984 and of staff numbers in 1985 is due to the transfer of responsibility to the Department for the National Museum of Ireland and the Irish Manuscripts Commission from the Department of Education and of the Public Record Office and State Paper Office from the Department of Justice.
(C) The increase in staff numbers in 1986 was due to the transfer from the Department of Education to my Department of the National Library in 1986.
