asked the Minister for Education the number of persons employed in her Department at 30 April 1987; the role of each employee; the number employed at the same date for the years 1980 to 1986 inclusive; and the total cost of this.

The statistical information requested by the Deputy is given in the table below. The role of the employees of the Department of Education is to perform whatever duties are assigned to them from time to time by the Minister for Education in furtherence of the function of the Department which is to ensure, within the framework of Government policy, that optimum educational services are provided at 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels and for continuing education.

Notes

(1) In January 1983, 17 officers transferred to the Department of Labour in connection with the transfer to that Department of responsibility for youth affairs.

(2) In February 1985, 98 officers transferred to the Department of the Taoiseach in connection with the transfer to that Department of responsibility for the National Museum and the Irish Manuscripts Commission.

(3) In November 1985, 58 officers transferred to the Department of Education from the Office of Public Works in connection with the transfer to the Department of responsibility for primary school building.

(4) In May 1986, nine officers transferred to the Department of Education from the Department of Labour in connection with the reorganisation of responsibilities for youth affairs.

(5) In July 1986, 56 officers transferred to the Department of the Taoiseach in connection with the transfer to that Department of responsibility for the National Library.

(6) The cost figures shown are for the financial year.
