Vol. 372 No. 13

Written Answers. - AIDS Programme.

281.

asked the Minister for Health in relation to the AIDS programme, the numbers who have been tested to date; the increases in the numbers presenting themselves for tests as a result of the education programme; the number of these who have been HIV positive; and if he has satisfied himself that resources are adequate.

The latest figures available from the Virus Reference Laboratory to 30th April, 1987, show that a total of 9,338 tests have been carried out, of which, 590 proved HIV positive. It is still too early to determine the effect that the Public Information Programme on AIDS, launched earlier this month and now being carried out in each health board area, has had on HIV test figures. The Central Strategy Committee on AIDS, established under my Department, is continuing to monitor the situation and will recommend future action that will be required to combat the spread of the virus.
