asked the Minister for Health if he will provide details of the basis for comments made to the former Dáil Committee on Public Expenditure on 28 January 1986 from officials at his Department stating that the cost of medical services in Ireland was the third lowest in Europe per head of population; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The statement made to the Public Expenditure Committee in this regard was based on data, reflecting total expenditure on health services, published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. As stated, the data indicate that among EC countries Ireland ranked ninth in terms of per capita expenditure on health services in 1983. The relevant data were tabulated in the reply to a previous parliamentary question (Column 2734, Vol. 363, Official Report).
