Vol. 373 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical and Dental Training Facilities.

76.

asked the Minister for Health his views on the provision of medical and dental training facilities in Ireland, in particular on the provision of a new Dublin dental hospital as a training facility, in view of the fact that there are five separate medical training facilities in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have initiated an analysis of the medical manpower situation in Ireland and in this context my Department is engaged in discussions with the Department of Education on the appropriate intake level for students into our medical schools to match service requirements. So far as dental manpower is concerned, the appropriate number of dental officers required for this country is under examination by my Department and the Dental Council. The Department of Education, together with the Higher Education Authority, has primary responsibility for our medical and dental schools. The question of the provision of a new Dublin dental hospital as a training facility is, therefore, a matter for the Minister for Education.
