I presume the question refers to the acute hospital sector. The explanation is that in general the acute public hospitals cater for a higher throughput of more complicated and, consequently, more costly treatment procedures. However, the Deputy will appreciate that average daily costs in high technology private hospitals such as the Mater and Blackrock Clinic are significantly higher than average daily costs in acute public hospitals.
