Vol. 373 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Post-Primary Accommodation.

298.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the need for a new second level school in the Huntstown-Hartstown area of Mulhuddart, Dublin 15; if she will give the latest projections of student numbers for second level places in that area for the next ten years; if she will say whether she intends to make plans for the construction of a new second level school in the area in the foreseeable future; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department is at present carrying out an extensive review of the newly developing areas in Blanchardstown and Mulhuddart, including the Huntstown-Hartstown area, to determine its needs regarding post-primary school accommodation. I am aware of the expansion of housing in these areas and I have requested my Department to complete its review as soon as possible. Any decision on the future provision of post-primary accommodation to cater for the Huntstown-Hartstown area will be taken by me in the light of this review.

The table below shows the number of pupils from primary schools in the Huntstown-Hartstown area which, it is projected, will be seeking entry to second level schools in the coming years: 1987, 31; 1988, 46; 1989, 75; 1990, 101; 1991, 113; 1992, 140; 1993, 191; 1994, 193.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the overcrowding at Huntstown primary school, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, as a result of which there will be no room for many children of the area of school-starting age by September 1988; if she will give details of the plans she has for extending the school including the number of extra classrooms, the type of classrooms and the date on which construction of such an extension will commence; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

An application from the school authorities for additional classroom accommodation for September, 1989 was received on 21 May 1987 and is under consideration in my Department. As soon as a decision is reached, it will be conveyed to the chairman of the board of management. The school has some empty classrooms at present.
