asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that stun guns are being used in the city of Dublin especially by bouncers at clubs and dancehalls; if his attention has been drawn to the statement from the Irish Council of Civil Liberties regarding this matter; if he intends to either introduce a ban on these guns or alternatively a system of licensing; the action, if any, he intends taking to curb the use of these guns; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of newspaper reports to the effect that stun guns are available on the market, and I have requested a report on the use of same. I would not consider it appropriate in a reply to a parliamentary question to say what specific legislative controls may be contemplated to deal with this, or indeed any other, issue. If and when I have legislative proposals on this matter, I will bring them before the House in the ordinary way.
