Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - Censorship of Publications Act.

73.

asked the Minister for Justice the membership of the Censorship of Publications Board; their professional or occupational positions; and the qualifications, if any, for the job as censor.

The membership of the Censorship of Publications Board is as follows:— His Honour Judge Diarmuid P. Sheridan (Chairman); Mr. Paddy Murchan; Ms. Aisling Doyle; Ms. Janet Colgan. There is one vacancy on the board.

The board is appointed under section 2 of the Censorship of Publications Act, 1946. The Act does not specify the professional or occupational positions or the qualifications of members of the board. Accordingly, I consider that it would not be appropriate to supply the personal information requested.

74.

asked the Minister for Justice the membership of the Censorship Appeals Board; their profession or occupational positions; and the qualifications, if any, for the job.

The membership of the Censorship of Publications Appeal Board is as follows:— His Honour Judge Peter O'Malley (Chairman); Mr. Michael McMahon; Mr. Joe McCluskey; Ms. Catherine Forde; Ms. Margaret B. Campbell.

The board is appointed under section 3 of the Censorship of Publications Act, 1946. The Act specifies that the chairman shall be a judge of the Supreme Court, High Court or Circuit Court or a practising barrister or practising solicitor of not less than seven years' standing. The Act does not specify the professional or occupational positions or the qualifications of members of the board, apart from the Chairman. Accordingly, I consider that it would not be appropriate to supply the personal information requested.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, he has to change or update the Censorship of Publications Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no proposals at present to amend the Censorship of Publications Acts.
