Vol. 373 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Funding.

87.

asked the Minister for Health if he will provide funds to ensure that severely handicapped adults will not be sent home from residential care to parents who, because of their age or infirmity, are unable to look after them; and if funds will be made available to maintain these persons in residential care; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The 1987 allocation to mental handicap agencies funded directly by my Department is just over £64 million which is 5.2 per cent more than the approved outturn for 1986. The question of sending severely handicapped people home to their parents because of difficulties in relation to funding should not, therefore, arise.
