Vol. 373 No. 6

Written Answers. - Relationships/Sex Education Programme.

16.

asked the Minister for Education the number of second level schools which have a specific programme which includes relationships/sex education; and the percentage this is of the total school population receiving second level education.

26.

asked the Minister for Education the number of schools which have satisfactory human relationships/sex education programmes at present operating in (a) single-sex boys' schools (b) single-sex girls' schools and (c) co-education schools.

38.

asked the Minister for Education the further plans, if any, she has for ensuring the introduction and conduct on a realistic basis of relationships/sex education programme in second-level schools following the issue of the guidelines in Circular M12/87 on 16 February, 1987.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 16, 26 and 38 together.

The position is that second-level schools in general do not offer relationships/sex education as a separate specific programme but integrate this provision with the overall educational programme of the individual school. Elements of sexuality and relationships education are included in various subjects and in other educational activities such as pastoral care. I understand that all post-primary schools provide education in aspects of relationships and sexuality for their pupils. This is primarily a matter between schools and parents and I am satisfied that all categories of post-primary schools are aware of the need to attend to this aspect of pupil development. I consider that my Department's circular on relationships/sex education provides appropriate guidelines for schools on the topic. I will continue to keep the matter under review in the light of changing needs.
