Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Funding for Kildare Roadworks.

123.

asked the Minister for the Environment the funding being made available for road works at Maynooth Road, Celbridge, County Kildare; and the works which will be covered by funding.

A special road grant allocation of £159,000 has been notified to Kildare County Council towards the cost of road improvement works at this location in 1987. As the road forms part of the network of regional roads, the rate of grant is 90 per cent of the cost of such works as may be approved by my Department.

The local authority's engineering proposals for the improvement of this road are currently being examined in the Department. They provide for the widening and realignment of a 1.6 km stretch of the road. A decision on these proposals will be conveyed to the local authority within a matter of weeks.

The authority has indicated that it proposes to apply the current year's grant allocation towards the cost of land acquisitions and preliminary works, such as site clearance and earthworks.
