Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Storage of Dangerous Substances.

209.

asked the Minister for Labour if the chemicals toluene, xylene, and hexane are considered dangerous; if they are presently stored at 33 Upper Mayor Street, North Wall, Dublin 1; if this is considered to be in the interest of public safety; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The substances mentioned are declared to be dangerous under the Dangerous Substances Act, 1972, (Part IV Declaration) Order, 1986 (S.I. No. 267 of 1986) for the purposes of Part IV of the Dangerous Substances Act. Quantities of these substances are stored at the premises in question.

Section 25 of the Act requires, amongst other things, that a person engaged in the storage of dangerous substances shall take all practicable steps to prevent risk of injury to person or property. The warehouse occupier is co-operating fully with the industrial inspectorate of my Department to ensure that the storage of the chemicals at the premises complies with international storage standards so as to avoid any risk of storage in dangerous circumstances. The inspectorate, together with the emergency services, is continuing to investigate and monitor storage of substances at the location.
