Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Curriculum Reform.

247.

asked the Minister for Education if she has satisfied herself that the curriculum, materials and skills associated with woodwork and metal work in post-primary schools are relevant to the needs of an industrial world undergoing rapid transformation through new technology including automation, robotics, other forms of computerised design and manufacture and information technology; if she considers that these subjects are in need of urgent reappraisal; if so, the steps, if any, she is taking in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The metalwork and woodwork syllabuses were restructured and updated recently by their relevant syllabus committees.

A revised syllabus in metalwork has been introduced and it will be examined for the first time in 1989.

In the case of the revised syllabus in woodwork, the syllabus committee recommended that more experience be gained in its implementation before it is introduced generally, and my Department accepted their recommendation that a pilot project be set up in 12 schools. This project is now being monitored by my Department's inspectorate and arrangements have also been made to hold a special examination in 1988 for students participating in the project.

I am assured that these subjects provide an appropriate introduction to tools, materials, processes, production and technology. I am well aware of the need to strengthen the technology base of practical subjects and I will contine to keep the matter under review in consultation with the Curriculum and Examinations Board.
