Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Illegal Trading in Clothing Industry.

48.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to allegations within the clothing industry concerning illegal trading, using imported sweat shop goods, some from Third World countries which are allegedly imported because customs control at certain times and at specific locations are considered very weak, with specific inability to control container loads of assorted clothing which are unable to be checked on a global invoice; if he will carry out an investigation of any such allegations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a percentage of all goods imported, including clothing in containers, is examined. While there have, in recent months, been some allegations of importations of clothing in excess of the amounts declared on the relevant Customs entry forms, thorough investigations of these allegations have produced no evidence of illegal importations. If the Deputy can supply specific details regarding alleged illegal imports the Revenue Commissioners will be happy to investigate the matter further.
