Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Transfer of Superannuation Entitlements.

64.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if a decision has been made regarding the transfer of superannuation entitlements from Córas Iompair Éireann to Galway County Council which was referred to his Department some time ago; the nature of the decision which has been arrived at and when a person (details supplied) in County Galway will be informed of the decision.

This case involves the participation of CIE in the Local Government (Transfer of Service Scheme), 1984, operated by the Department of the Environment. Primary responsibility in relation to such transfer of service rests between CIE and the Department of the Environment. My only function in the matter, in the event of amendments being required to the CIE superannuation schemes on foot of any transfer arrangements entered into, is to consider and confirm any such amendments that may be approved.

I have already advised CIE that I would have no objection to their amending their salaried staff superannuation scheme to provide for transfer of service on lines agreed with the Department of the Environment.

CIE is prepared to facilitate the transfer of superannuation entitlements to Galway County Council for the person concerned. Before effect can be given to such an arrangement, however, agreement has to be reached between the Department of the Environment and the committee of the CIE superannuation scheme concerned as to the conditions on which the transfer can take place; discussions are taking place between the parties concerned. CIE is conscious of the urgency of this matter for the person concerned and is endeavouring to arrive at a speedy resolution of the matter. It will be a matter for Galway County Council to advise the person concerned in due course.
