Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - New Ross (Wexford) Unemployment.

99.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the high unemployment rate in New Ross town and area, County Wexford; if his attention has further been drawn to the effects such unemployment is having on the town; the proposals, if any, he has to create new jobs and maintain present jobs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the level of unemployment in New Ross town and area and I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it is actively promoting New Ross as a suitable location for industrial investment. The authority is marketing a 27.5 acre site in the town for suitable industrial projects.

The Government's strategy as set out in the Programme for National Recovery is to stimulate overall economic growth which will lead not only to employment growth but to the elimination of job losses in manufacturing industry.
