Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Insurance Costs.

98.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, given the high cost of insurance in Ireland, he will adopt all or some of the suggestions incorporated in the document Insurance Premiums/why are they so high published by the Irish Insurance Federation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The suggestions put forward by the Irish Insurance Federation followed on from a recent invitation to the industry for joint action with Government to reduce insurance costs and premia. Broadly, the federation is calling for greater road and work safety and reform of the legal process. These proposals are in the areas of responsibility of my colleagues, the Ministers for the Environment, Labour and Justice and I will be working with them to achieve all feasible improvements in the overall environment for insurance.
