Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - Career Breaks.

61.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement regarding career breaks in the public service in respect of people who take career breaks and then take up employment within the country, for example those trained in the use of computers who are at present employed in the private sector.

The scheme of career breaks for established civil servants allows civil servants to take career breaks for various purposes including taking up alternative employment in Ireland.

The number of staff granted career breaks to take up employment in Ireland in the period April 1984-January 1987 was 309, 14 per cent of the total granted career breaks in this period. The records kept do not indicate the number of staff on career breaks trained in the use of computers who are presently employed in the private sector.
