Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - Physiotherapy Profession.

159.

asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, his Department have to introduce a State register for the physiotherapy profession; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that strong representations have been made by the profession requesting such a measure; if such a register would protect the public from people who do not have the proper qualifications; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that chartered physiotherapists have to do a minimum of three years academic course at University College, Dublin or Trinity College, Dublin 2, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I do not propose at this stage to introduce legislation to provide for State registration for physiotherapists.

I am aware that the profession has been seeking the introduction of such legislation for a number of years.

The physiotherapy profession, together with a number of other health professions, was informed last year that a decision had been taken not to introduce legislation of this kind. This decision was made on the grounds that the protections of the public from unqualified practitioners could not be guaranteed through such legislation.

I am familiar with the education and training requirements for a qualification in physiotherapy.
