Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - Customs and Excise Units Surveillance.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the level of surveillance by Customs and Excise units at our ports and airports is adequate; if he has further satisfied himself that the risk of smuggling, particularly of firearms, explosives and drugs, has not seriously increased due to cutbacks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that a recent review of antismuggling procedures places a greater emphasis on mobility in the use of available resources and permits intensive deployment of officers in selected areas whenever necessary. To support these procedures, additional vehicles and surveillance equipment have been purchased or are on order.

The Commissioners are satisfied that the present procedures are adequate and have not increased the risk of smuggling of, in particular, firearms, explosives and drugs.
