Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - PAYE Revenue.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance the tax revenue obtained from the PAYE sector in 1986; the projected revenue in 1987; the number of people paying tax under this system; the increase in their payments for 1987 over 1986 as a percentage.

The net receipt of income tax collected through the PAYE mechanism was £1,987.7 million in 1986 and is estimated at £2,167.1 million in 1987, an increase of 9 per cent.

The estimated number of effectively liable tax units paying tax under PAYE in the 1987-88 tax year is 734,000. A married couple who have elected, or been deemed to have elected, to have the income of both spouses assessed on the husband are counted as one tax unit.

I am conscious of the burden of taxation being borne by the PAYE sector. As I stated in my budget speech, it is the Government's intention, as soon as circumstances permit, to move to a stage where two-thirds of taxpayers will pay tax at the standard rate of tax only.
