Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Offices.

127.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the cost of administering all social welfare offices throughout the country; the number of persons in part-time employment in these offices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Managers of branch employment offices are employed on a contract basis and they are required to provide a local service for the purpose of administering the unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance schemes in areas where there are no employment exchanges. It is estimated that the total cost of branch managers' remuneration this year will be £4.5 million.

They are required to employ such clerical assistance as is necessary for the efficient performance of the work of the Department. The employment of staff is the responsibility of the branch managers. Approximately 300 staff are employed in the branch employment offices but information is not available as to how many of them work on a part time basis.
