Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Industry for Kildare.

131.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the plans, if any, the IDA have to provide alternative employment in north west Kildare to replace industries which will become obsolete as bogs become exhausted and the ESB power generating station at Allenwood, County Kildare nears the end of its working life; whether efforts are being made at present to provide alternative industries; whether other State or semi-State agencies might be involved in providing such industries; his views on whether an overall plan should now be formulated, the objective of which would be to meet the long term employment needs of the region; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The location of industry in County Kildare is a matter for the day-to-day administration of the IDA and one in which I have no function.

I am satisfied that the IDA are aware of impending developments in County Kildare which will have a bearing on unemployment in the county and will take such action as may be possible to deal with the situation as it arises. I will of course maintain close contact with the Minister for Energy on developments in the areas referred to by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the specific plans, if any, the IDA or his Department has to locate a major industry in County Kildare with particular reference to the towns of Leixlip and Newbridge where there is already availability of a highly skilled work force; and if he will make a statement on the matter having regard to the high numbers unemployed in the area.

The location of industry in County Kildare is a matter for the day-to-day administration of the IDA and one in which I have no function. However, the Deputy can rest assured that the IDA is actively promoting County Kildare for new industrial development.
