Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Trade with Taiwan.

133.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the balance of trade figures with Taiwan for the year 1986 and to the latest date; and his views on whether formal trade missions should be established on a reciprocal basis with that country.

Figures for trade between Ireland and Taiwan for 1986 and for the first quarter of 1987 are provided in the following tabular statement.

The Irish Government recognise the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China.

In so far as trade is concerned, however, CTT provides market support services to Irish exporters wishing to trade with Taiwan. CTT has made arrangements to be provided with essential market information on Taiwan and CTT can also arrange for the necessary support services during visits there by individual Irish exporters.

The Deputy will wish to know that this activity is in line with the practice of the common commercial policy by the European Commission which also recognises only the Government of the People's Republic of China.
