Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Careers Information Service.

205.

asked the Minister for Labour in view of the careers information services being scrapped for post primary schools the alternative measures, if any, he has to provide a vital careers service to schools.

Because of serious shortage of staff within the Department to deal with demand for places on various temporary employment schemes, in particular the social employment scheme, the staffing of all sections of the Department of Labour, including that dealing with careers information, is being reviewed at present. Demands on the careers information service decreases from the time intermediate, group and leaving certificate examinations begin until second-level schools open again after the summer holidays.

In these circumstances, it has been decided to assign staff from the careers information service on a temporary basis to the other sections. A final decision has not been taken about the future of the careers information service. Such a decision will be taken in the context of the integrated service for school leavers to be provided by An Foras Áiseanna Saothair.
