Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Community and Literacy Education Scheme.

222.

asked the Minister for Education the amount provided in the 1987 Estimates of Vocational Educational Committees for adult education, showing separately the amount for pay and non-pay the amount provided in 1986; and the amount provided in the Estimates from the former Government in January 1987.

The amount of money allocated to the VEC's in respect of the Community and Literacy Education Scheme for 1987 is £400,000 compared to £350,000 in 1986. The corresponding provision included in the Estimates for the Public Service 1987, published by the previous Government, was £500,000.

In relation to the question of funding for the other types of adult education courses which, in the main are expected to be self-financing, I refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question, No. 642, from her on this subject on 28 April 1987.

The Estimates for the Public Service 1987 as published by the previous Government provided for an overall allocation in subhead A2 of the Post-Primary Vote for annual grants to Vocational Education Committees. In determining this allocation, a specific amount was not designated for Adult Education, apart from the Community and Literacy Education Scheme.
