Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Embassy Permission.

78.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, having given permission to South Korea to open an Embassy in Dublin he will allow Israel to do the same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I stated in my reply to questions by Deputies Higgins and Crowley on 16 June, 1987 the proposal of the Republic of Korea to establish a resident Embassy in Dublin was considered in the light of Ireland's foreign policy interests and approved by Government on that basis.

As to any similar discussions which we have from time to time with other countries, I have to say that such discussions are confidential and it would not be right for me to comment publicly on their content. I can say however, that in any such discussions, an important criterion in judging any proposals which may be made is how they relate to the State's foreign policy objectives in the political, economic, consular and other fields. The availability of the financial and personnel resources necessary to implement any particular proposal is of course also an important factor.
