Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Character References by Gardaí.

90.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will issue a directive to all Garda stations that no applications by job applicants for character references be entertained by any Garda station; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the practice of employers demanding Garda references from prospective employees is creeping back in, particularly in the Coolock/Santry station areas in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that it is contrary to regulations for gardaí to supply character references either to job applicants or to employers. If the Deputy is aware of any instances where such references have been supplied I suggest that he should provide the relevant details to the Garda authorities.
