Vol. 373 No. 14

Written Answers. - Irish-European Electricity Link.

65.

asked the Minister for Energy the plans, if any, he has to carry out a feasibility study on the possible establishment of an Irish/ European electricity interconnector; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Both my Department and the ESB have recently carried out studies into the technical and financial feasibility of establishing electricity interconnection with Europe. These studies are under review at present. It is my intention that, as the need arises for consideration of further ESB plant development, interconnection will be one of the options which will be taken into account. Our present estimates are that additional ESB capacity will not be needed for a very long time.
