Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Continuation of B & I.

103.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will make a statement on the situation at B & I; the steps, if any, he is taking to secure the continuation of B & I as a viable industry; and if he supports its continuation.

In May 1987 the Government decided to make available to the B & I additional equity of up to £8 million in the period to end October 1987. At that time I directed the B & I Board to submit to me as soon as possible a plan of action for implementation in the autumn, aimed at restoring the company to viability.

I expect to have such a plan very soon and I will then arrange to have the matter considered by the Government. As I indicated to the House on 23 June 1987 it is my earnest hope that the process I have initiated will produce proposals for a viable B & I.
