asked the Minister for Labour in relation to each personal assistant, adviser, consultant, typist, secretary, or other category employed from outside Civil Service in a temporary or part-time or permanent capacity, or on a contractual basis since 10 March the name, rank, remuneration and terms of employment, and if seconded, from where.

The only such appointment made in the Department of Labour has been Ms. Sandra Cullagh who was appointed as Personal Secretary to the Minister with effect from 30 March, 1987. Ms Cullagh is being paid an incremental salary, currently equivalent to the sixth point on the Clerical Assistant scale. Employment is in a temporary capacity, terminable by notice on either side.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons employed in (1) his constituency office and (2) his private office, the rank of each person and the salary paid; if he will outline the functions of the constituency office and the private office; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total salaries paid in respect of staff in the Minister's constituency office amount to £57,667. The salaries in respect of staff in the private office amount to £92,295.

The function of the staff in the Minister's constituency office is to assist the Minister in his role as public representative.

The function of the staff in the Minister's private office is to provide administrative support in the discharge of his ministerial functions.
