Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - BCG Vaccination.

249.

asked the Minister for Health his policy on the BCG vaccination of newborn children; if the policy is under review and if so; when a decision can be expected.

BCG vaccination is generally provided for all newborn infants in heavily populated areas in which the risk of contracts is greatest. It is a matter for each Director of Community Care and Medical Officer of Health, in both rural and urban areas, to determine what procedures to implement in their area, on the basis of the epidemiological situation.

The Faculty of Community Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland are currently analysing the age specific tuberculin conversion rates in children. Policy in BCG vaccination will be reviewed when the results of this analysis are received.
