Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate.

271.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a student (details supplied) in a secondary school in County Limerick is not being granted an exemption from the requirement that Irish must be taken as a Leaving Certificate subject.

Exemption from the study of Irish is granted under the terms of Rule 46 of the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools which states that "A child whose primary education up to 11 years of age was received in Northern Ireland or outside Ireland may substitute any other subject from the list of approved subjects ...". The pupil concerned was not considered eligible for exemption under this rule as part of her primary education before the age of 11 was received in this country.
