Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Irish Made Goods.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce his policy towards promoting the purchase of Irish made goods; the active steps he is taking to this end, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The successful promotion of the purchase of Irish made goods is dependent on the development of strong, competitive, indigenous companies which can realistically compete, in both domestic and export markets, in terms of price, quality and reliability. The extensive services and expertise of State agencies such as the Industrial Development Authority, Córas Tráchtála and the Irish Goods Council are available to assist Irish industry in this regard.

Additionally, I will be seeking Government approval shortly for a number of initiatives on import substitution aimed at further strengthening manufacturers in the home market. The House will be aware, of course, that any such measures must be compatible with our EC obligations. While the Government seeks to give all possible support the Deputy will recognise that, ultimately, the main responsibility for selling Irish goods at home or abroad rests with Irish manufacturers themselves. I would urge Irish buyers to give Irish consumers a real choice by seeking out and promoting Irish manufactured goods where these match their foreign counterparts in quality, price and delivery.
