Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rape Law.

96.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement regarding the recommendation made by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Women's Rights in connection with the Criminal Law Rape Act, 1981; and if he has satisfied himself with the present manner of operation of the law dealing with rape.

I refer the Deputy to the answer I gave on 18 June last to two parliamentary questions on this subject (Dáil Debates, Vol. 373, cols. 2659 and 2660) in which I informed the House that the Law Reform Commission, following a decision of the previous Administration, were examining the law on rape and I would wish to have the benefit of the Commission's views and recommendations before considering what, if any, changes there should be in the law in this area. When the Commission's report is received it will be considered by my Department as a matter of urgency.

I understand the Commission hope to be in a position shortly to publish a consultation paper on the subject.
