Vol. 374 No. 3

Written Answers. - Vandalism on DART Line.

42.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, in view of the serious outbreak of vandalism on the DART line, caused mainly by trespass on the railway line and in stations, he will grant Dublin Suburban Railways' request to raise the fine from £2 for such offences to a fine of £100 thus empowering the Garda to take more positive action in curbing this serious problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I agree that the current penalty for trespass on the railway — which is a fine not exceeding £2 — is not an adequate deterrent for would be offenders. I intend to introduce legislation in the near future which will include provision for considerably higher penalties for offences such as trespass.
