Vol. 374 No. 4

Written Answers. - Electoral Register.

20.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange a change in electoral procedures to provide for the issue of notices to those whose names are being removed from the electoral register; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I take it that the Deputy is referring to cases where persons are properly included in the old register and are, without apparent reason, inadvertently omitted from the new.

I fully share his concern that this should happen even in isolated cases. I have asked local authorities to redouble their efforts to improve the accuracy of the register and, in particular, to ensure that qualified electors are not omitted.

In the longer term, I am considering whether changes in the registration procedure are desirable in order to bring about greater accuracy.
