asked the Minister for Justice the buildings and sites in the ownership of his Department; the locations of same; if they are at present in use by his Department; if not, the use which is proposed for them; when it is envisaged to utilise the site or building; the proposals, if any, there are to dispose of the buildings or sites; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A disproportionate expenditure of official resources would be involved in attempting to compile particulars of old custodial properties, disused (as such) throughout most of this century and largely handed over for decades for use by local authorities; or, in the case of some former staff dwelling houses, rented to occupants.

The following properties are currently in use or envisaged for use in relation to custodial operations.

1. Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin. Prison etc.

2. Cork Prison, Rathmore Road, Cork. Prison etc.

3. Everton House, Old Cabra Road, Dublin. Prison Service Training Centre.

4. Hart's Corner, Phibsborough, Dublin. Seven acre site: being considered for sale.

5. Limerick Prison, Mulgrave Street, Limerick. Prison etc. and 2.5 acres — currently rented — to enable Limerick Prison to be modernised in the long term in its existing location.

6. Loughan House, Blacklion, Co. Cavan. Place of "open" custody.

7. Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim. Staff House — related to Loughan House.

8. Mountjoy, North Circular Road, Dublin. Including Mountjoy Prison, St. Patrick's Institution, The Training Unit, Glengarriff Parade and official staff accommodation.

9. Portlaoise, Co. Laois. Prison etc., farm, official accommodation and staff training centre.

10. Richmond Lodge, Kilmainham, Dublin. An 0.25 acre site particularly suitable as the location for an intended hostel for a small number of offenders — there is an annual income from advertising.

11. Shanganagh Castle, Shankill, Co. Dublin. Place of "open" custody.

12. Shelton Abbey, Arklow, Co. Wicklow. Place of "open" custody.

13. Wheatfield, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin. Custodial accommodation under construction.

The premises hereunder are operated as probation centres by voluntary management committees in conjunction with the Probation and Welfare Service of my Department. These centres cater for offenders on probation from the courts and on release from custody.

1. Probation Hostel, 16 Lady Lane, Waterford.

2. Probation Hostel, 17 Audley Place, Patrick's Hill, Cork.

3. Probation Workshop, Tivoli Terrace, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

4. Probation Workshop, Harbour Road, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

5. Probation Workshop, McDonagh Terrace, Tuam, Co. Galway.

A premises at 15 Lr. Merchant's Road, Galway was purchased with a view to establishing a probation training workshop. This project met with opposition from the local community and had to be abandoned. The premises is currently being considered for sale.
