Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - RTE Radio.

120.

asked the Minister for Communications if, in the context of his responsibilities for radio frequency management matters, he will discuss with RTE the possibility of increasing the range of their radio programmes so that they can be received by emigrants throughout the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is assumed that the Deputy is interested in RTE Radio 1 reception in the United Kingdom from the Tullamore transmitter. This transmitter is operating at the maximum power permitted under the relevant international agreement governing the operation of medium wave transmitters. I understand that RTE are currently examining the possibility of making adjustments to the technical characteristics of the transmitter which will result in a marginal improvement in reception, while remaining within the technical parameters laid down in the agreement.
