Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Ashbourne (Meath) Proposed New School.

189.

asked the Minister for Education the outcome of the recent meeting between her Department and Meath County Council regarding the proposed new secondary school at Ashbourne, County Meath; if the impasse has been solved; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

190.

asked the Minister for Education if £3 million was allocated specifically for the erection of a new second level school at Ashbourne, County Meath, in the 1987 Education Estimates; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

191.

asked the Minister for Education if a specific ministerial commitment was given by the previous Minister for Education to provide a new second level school at Ashbourne, County Meath; and is she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 189, 190 and 191 together. My predecessors had authorised the provision of a new second level school at Ashbourne, County Meath and architectural planning for the proposed school was initiated in early 1986. No specific allocation was made in the 1987 estimates for this project, as provision for capital expenditure on the second level education sector is made on a global basis.

The difficulties arising from the county council's road proposal have not been satisfactorily resolved. The implications of this are at present being considered in my Department.
