Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Numbers of Pupils in Classes.

196.

asked the Minister for Education the function of her Department in advising schools as to the maximum numbers of pupils there should be in classes for particular subjects so as to ensure the maximum educational benefit to pupils.

The organisation of the school curriculum, subject options, class sizes, etc. within the overall teacher allocation sanctioned by my Department is a matter for the managerial authority of each individual school.

The rules governing the payment of special grants to secondary schools for practical subjects outline the maximum number of pupils that may be permitted in those classes.

My Department do not issue guidelines to post-primary schools as to the upper limit of pupils to be allowed in classes for general subjects. This would be a matter for determination by the school authorities having regard to all relevant circumstances.
