It is estimated that the average pupil/teacher ratio in national schools in 1988 will be 29:1. This year it is 26.8:1 and in 1960 it was 34.8:1.

The revision of the schedule of averages for the appointment and retention of teachers in national schools, as circularised to schools in May 1974, provided for a minimum of 40 units of average daily enrolment, in most cases, for each additional teaching post.
