asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the falling numbers learning modern continental languages other than French in post primary schools, she will seek special assistance from the EC and also from non-EC Governments to undertake special programmes in language learning in the light of the increased opportunities for export markets and mobility of labour following European ratification of the Single European Act.

I do not accept that all modern continental languages, other than French, are in decline in our post primary schools. German, for example, is attracting increasing interest and the numbers of schools and pupils taking it are increasing. Choice of a particular language by a pupil is often influenced by parental advice. It is likely too that if a significant demand for a language other than French was articulated locally the school would respond appropriately.
I am at present studying the feasibility of a number of proposals regarding the promotion of languages other than French. It is my intention to avail myself, as far as possible, of any international assistance as may be available for this purpose.
