Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Adult Literacy Agency.

56.

asked the Minister for Education the level of support she will grant the National Adult Literacy Agency in 1988; the way in which this compares with the Government's grant in 1987 and with the former Government's grant for 1986 and their intended grant for 1987.

The grant-in-aid for the National Adult Literacy Agency is paid from my Department's grant-in-aid subhead for cultural, scientific and educational organisations. The provision in this subhead for 1988 is the same as that for 1987. A decision has not yet been taken as to the allocations to be made from the subhead to the various bodies concerned.

On the basis of Estimates for the public services for 1987 published prior to the present Government assuming office, provisional allocations were made in the Department. The provisional allocation for NALA was £43,000.

As part of the Government's measures to meet the serious state of public finances with which it was faced on assuming office, a substantial reduction was made in the subhead for cultural, scientific and educational organisations in the revised Estimates for 1987 produced by the Government. NALA was allocated £28,000 for 1987 from the amount then in the subhead.

A grant of £41,500 was paid to NALA in 1986.
