Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Educational Cutbacks.

63.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the feeling of unease within the Teachers' Union of Ireland and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation that they do not have an inside track within her Department and that as a result their sectors have been disproportionately affected by the cutbacks as disclosed in the recently published Estimates for her Department for 1988; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that any of the teacher unions have questioned the impartiality of the officials of my Department.

It is only natural that there would be a feeling of uneasiness among teachers at restraints on spending on education, but I do not accept that there has been discrimination against particular sectors of the education system.
