Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Transfer of Prisoner.

88.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a person (details supplied) was transferred from Portlaoise prison, County Laois, to Dundrum psychiatric hospital in Dublin 14 in which he passed away; and the background to his hunger strike protest.

As an inquest is to be held in relation to the death of the person referred to by the Deputy I do not consider it appropriate to comment on this matter at this stage other than to make the general point that all transfers of prisoners to hospitals — including mental hospitals — are made on medical grounds.
