Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Action on Violent Crimes.

87.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason the Garda have not taken any action following a robbery (details supplied) in Dublin 7, although one of the culprits was identified by the victim; if he is concerned at the number of muggings/robberies at this location; the reason this situation is permitted to continue; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the practice for Ministers for Justice to make statements to the House about specific Garda operations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an operation, or some particular aspect of it, are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate. I do not propose to make any statement about the particular matter referred to in the question except to say that I am not to be taken as agreeing with the allegation in the question that no action was taken by the Garda in the matter.

It is, of course, open to a complainant or any other person with a bona fide interest in a particular case to write to the Garda Síochána and ask for information privately and I have no doubt that the Garda will be as helpful as possible.

As regards the level of crimes of the nature mentioned, the Garda authorities have assured me that they are aware of the problem and are giving and will continue to give special attention to the area in question by way of foot and mobile patrols and by the involvement of other specialist Garda units.
