asked the Minister for Labour if he has satisfied himself with the Jobsearch programme and the way in which their duties are being carried out; if he will explain the way in which people are being informed of jobs being available as when an investigation of applicants is carried out and they are found to be suitable, there is subsequently no vacancy.

The involvement of the Department of Labour and Manpower agencies in the Jobsearch programme entails interviewing those on the live register, offering them places on employment and training programmes (including special Jobsearch courses) and referrals to employers with vacancies.

At 30 October 1987, 3,359 people interviewed under the Jobsearch programme were placed in vacancies notified to the National Manpower Service by employers.

When a vacancy is notified by an employer, the NMS selects and refers a number of applicants for interview by the employer. It is inevitable that some vacancies will be filled before all applicants have been interviewed by the prospective employer. The NMS is aware that this arises from time to time and the situation is monitored to minimise such occurrences.
